With a population of just over 1,000, Campti town in Louisiana is one of the nation’s ten lowest-income regions according to the 2010 census. The median household income stands at just $11,382 — significantly and starkly lower than the national average of $52,000. Despite all of the glaring numbers, the people of Campti haven’t let the statistics hold them back.
“Much of [the region] has been identified as having both low-income and low-access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables [and it’s] facing a crisis with more than 3 out of every 10 people in many rural communities living in poverty,” writes the local Campti Field of Dreams, a nonprofit dedicated to improving community health and well-being. “We are going back to those good-old-days when everybody had a vegetable “victory” garden [since] gardening is exercise that can be done at almost any age, and the by-product is fresh produce that can help you reduce your grocery bill and sometimes even bring in a little additional income.”
Through its community garden program, which encourages all who desire access to affordable produce to join in on the farming efforts, the Campti Field of Dreams has shaped the local community in more ways than one since its establishment in 2001. But the foundation itself needed a few items to keep them going — which is where Random Acts supporter “The Green Cooler” stepped in.
“Campti Field of Dreams works to change the prospects of local citizens by creating things like a community garden … outdoor classrooms using wooden pallets for desks, and so forth,” they wrote in March. Seeing the nonprofit’s need for administrative supplies to keep their efforts going strong, The Green Cooler (@TheGreenCooler) and friends pooled their time and Random Acts-approved funding to help.
“The project went off extremely well,” they wrote recently, stating that staff, friends, and eve strangers pitched in to give back to those who make being kind a daily goal.
By purchasing new office supplies like a printer, a laptop, and a projector (as well as other, various requested items), The Green Cooler and friends were able to help the amazing staff at Campti Field of Dreams work toward furthering their goals of creating prosperity and long-term benefits in their corner of Louisiana.
