We’re all over the place lately! After a whirlwind of a week last week, we’re packed and ready to head up to Creation Entertainment’s Salute to Supernatural, Vancouver (or #VanCon, as we fondly know it). From Friday morning through noon on Sunday, August 28 to the 30, Random Acts staffers Shahr and Kimberley will be present in the #VanCon vendors room collecting donations for local nonprofit, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC).
What Is DEWC?
DEWC was founded as a women’s and children’s shelter in 1978 and has grown since then to provide services and assistance for up to 500 women, children, and seniors each day. Today, in addition to its housing options, the center offers hot meals, free clothing, computer access, haircuts, and first aid to its residents.
According to the organization’s official website, the DEWC provides help for “immediate and crisis needs” in order for residents to regain personal stability, and works to “promote positive change by offering individual long-term support, education, advocacy, peer mentorship and exposure to alternatives.”
What Can I Do To Help The DEWC Over #VanCon Weekend?
Over this coming convention weekend, Random Acts is asking our supporters to help us #GetKind by bringing in the following items for donation:
If you’re feeling extra generous, or have one on hand, the DEWC has also asked for a refurbished desktop computer (for the housing outreach team) that is no more than 3 years old and equipped with the following: (a). Processor: Core Duo, i3 or i5; (b). Operating System: Windows 7; (c). Memory: 4 GB or more; (d). Storage: 80 GB or more. The DEWC has also specified that it is in need of various feminine hygiene products as well, all of which may be dropped off at the Random Acts table.
What if I can’t bring a donation?
That’s okay! We’ll be running two exciting activities at our table over the weekend as well, in which all attendees are encouraged to participate. Come by and check out our Kindness Question canvas and leave your mark behind (or even just a heartfelt doodle), and make sure to also snap a pic at our “photo booth”! Challenge yourself by selecting a feeling, emotion, or issue from our super-secret box, and then take a photo and brand it with our official hashtag to share with your friends. See? Spreading kindness is as easy as “Cheese”.
I’m not going! How can I help?
If you won’t be in attendance at #VanCon this weekend, we’re encouraging all to visit the DEWC website to find out more. You can make an online donation or find a shelter in your own city that needs assistance. Whatever you decide, we know your act of kindness will be fantastic.
For all those headed to #VanCon, we can’t wait to see you — and to all of our supporters, let’s get ready to #GetKind!
