We’ll be chasing some demons (and angels, and hunters) over to Creation Entertainment’s Salute to Supernatural, Chicago on October 24th – October 26th. So how are we planning to #GetKind this time around?
Throughout the weekend, we will be collecting donations for Chicago’s Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC). The CAWC was founded in 1977 after a city-wide meeting addressing the crisis of domestic abuse; only two years later, they opened the Greenhouse Shelter, a home for battered women and children which has grown to become the city’s largest domestic violence refuge. Since then, the CAWC has gone on to establish some of Chicago’s most effective counseling and therapeutic programs, a hospital referral system dedicated to identifying victims of abuse and directing them to the proper medical facilities, and a successful intervention program.
Throughout #ChiCon weekend, Random Acts will be collecting new items to donate to the shelter. Currently, they are most in need of school supplies for children and adolescents of all ages and grade levels. You can drop off scissors, glue, notebooks, folders, binders, calculators, pens and pencils, and new backpacks, as well as any other school supplies you think they might need.
* In addition to school supplies the following items are also acceptable: family-size toiletries, laundry detergent, diapers (especially sizes 4, 5, and 6), cleaning supplies, new underwear and socks (women’s and children’s sizes), towels and washcloths, grocery store gift cards and used cell-phones, and two new laptops for use by the center’s inhabitants. Please, no used clothing, shoes, or toys.
Random Acts staffers Kerry and Melanie will be present in the Vendors Room Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; you may bring any items you wish to donate at that time. Of course, we haven’t forgotten that Halloween is just around the corner: when you drop off your goods, make sure to check out our “Tricks for Treats” challenge and earn some sweet prizes!
We can’t wait to visit with all of our amazing supporters — mark your calendars… we’ll see you there!
(If you’re unable to bring along an item or can’t make it to the convention, you can still help the CAWC! To send a monetary gift or to volunteer your time and talents, check out http://cawc.org/support-cawc/ or send an email their way at email@example.com.)
