12 Acts of Kindness, Day Three: Caring for Veterans

12acts_updated-01-01On the third day of the 12 Acts of Kindness, we’re not giving you any French hens (apologies) — we’re giving you something much better. It was 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who uttered the words, “Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause.” Though years have passed and times have changed, the sentiment remains the same: for those who pledge their lives to the cause of freedom around the world, we owe the utmost gratitude this holiday season. That feeling is shared wholeheartedly by Random Acts Destination Projects Manager Tracy Liu, who made it a point to recognize the veterans in her community. Knowing that holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas can be lonely times for those confined to a hospital or home, Tracy and her friend Jo decided to put together dozens of care packages and deliver them to the patients of the Miami VA Medical Center.

Visiting with patients

Inside each bag was an assortment of holiday sweets, books, and headphones. As Tracy and Jo moved from room to room, personally delivering each gift, the smiles grew to be contagious and the visits became longer. “A few of the patients wanted to chat more, so we spent some extra time talking,” says Tracy. After a day filled with cheerful visits, the patients were thrilled. But Tracy and Jo weren’t done yet.

“We put together little bags for the staff as well,” Tracy adds. Inside the gift bags were handfuls of candy canes, sweets, and Starbucks gift cards — perfect for the hardworking hospital employees who spend day after day caring for the very special patients in their charge.

With all of the chaos of the upcoming holiday season, it’s a safe bet that the patients and staff of the Miami VA Medical Center will have a little extra joy to file away for the chilly nights and a little extra happiness to go around.
